Jaime A. Balladares
Research Interests:
I am an Educational Psychologist and Master in Educational Psychology from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile - Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Currently, I am a Ph.D Student at the Institute of Education. I am interested in the literacy processes in general. During my master I investigated some motivational processes involved in adult literacy. Now, in my Ph.D. thesis, I am conducting a research about processes that underlie reading through a longitudinal study with early young children. The doctoral research takes place in Chile and includes cognitive tasks, early language and literacy predictors. In particular, my interest is to know which processes could become better predictors of reading than others and how they are related. Additionally, I am studying what processes are affected by variables as age and socioeconomic status, and whether some tasks differ or not, when a sample of Spanish-speaking children is considered (a significant amount of literacy research has considered just English-speaking children).
In sum, the focus of my research is on literacy and its underlying processes. Is my interest further include some changes in the children's development patterns, such as hours of sleep and wakefulness, time spent on TV or computer, quality and quantity of food daily and presence or absence of auditory or visual diseases during the first years of life.
