Emma Chatzispyridou
I am a 3rd year PhD student in the department of Psychology and Human Development (under the supervision of Dr Yvonne Griffiths).
Research project: The relationship between the development of attention and foundation literacy skills.
There is a growing interest in the role of attention skills as indicators of school readiness with limited evidence from studies examining the longitudinal relationship between children’s attention as predictors of their early education outcomes. In my research project, I investigate the development of attention and early reading skills for a sample of 83 children in Reception up to Year 1.
Their visual and auditory attention (selective attention, sustained attention and attention control) is measured employing cognitive tests and their early reading- related cognitive-linguistic skills (letter-sound knowledge, early word reading, phoneme awareness, vocabulary and RAN) are also assessed.
